Creative Director & Artist: Wonyáe

Q: How would you define being an independent artist?

A: It is rewarding and stressful. You never really have time off and things are constantly going on. You have to be ready to create and be ready to handle business at the same exact pace. Although things can sometimes be a blur, because I wear many hats. But the end results are beyond worth it.

Q: What do you do as a creative director?

A: As a creative director I remove myself as an artist and fully devote myself to the art, style and direction of every project. I connect individuals that I feel will bring the project to life as well.

Q: What was your experience like performing at SOB’s?

A: It was an amazing experience. The room was filled with tons of talent and it was my first time performing in NYC. I had my entire team by my side and we put on a great show.

Q: What do you like the most and dislike about performing?

A: I love connecting with the crowd and witnessing their reactions. I dislike the process of prepping for performances and dealing with everyone all at once. It can become draining but it’s fulfilling once it all comes together so I have to take it with a grain of salt.

Q: What do you think the most important part to your career is?

A: The most important part for me is growth while remaining grounded and staying true to myself in all aspects of my life.

Q: What do you write your songs about? Are they based off of your own personal experiences?

A: I write my songs about my own experiences and sometimes add in a bit of others experiences that I’ve come across. I tend to really enjoy writing break up and self love songs.

Q: Where is the coolest place you have performed at?

A: I would have to say Fete Music Hall & SOB’s without a doubt.

Q: Would you ever sing at a wedding or other events? Why or why not?

A: Of course! I actually told my manager I would like to grab some wedding gigs some time soon. They are perfect to just sing and control the vibe of the venue.

Q: Who would you like to tour with? Why?

A: I honestly have not thought too much about this. But I will say I would want to tour with someone that puts on an entertaining show and has a dope personality.

Q: What do your dance rehearsals look like when preparing for a performance?

A: Dance rehearsals for me consist of all four of my dancers and hours of practice, stretching, disagreements, agreements and laughter.
