Zazu Babii - “Derrick Henry”

With his latest release, “Derrick Henry,” Zazu Babii unleashes an attention-grabbing and intense track with a video to match. Rapid camera zooms and ever-changing lighting enhances the basement setting of the music video; above all else, Zazu Babii’s face takes center stage. His gaze instantly draws in his viewer, utilizing near-constant eye contact with the camera as a means of establishing authority, asserting dominance, or simply demanding your attention.

One particularly gripping shot in the video features Zazu Babii in black and white with flames dancing along the bottom of the screen behind him. The flames, in a saturated orange hue, juxtapose with the lack of any other color and imbue the scene with drama and intensity. His eyes capture confidence that echoes through the rest of the video. He occupies the center of the screen in nearly every shot, while the other characters (often donning black ski masks that obscure their faces) fade to the background. While these peripheral figures wear heavy black clothing including sweatshirts and puffer coats, Zazu Babii himself is shirtless for much of the video. In the lyrics he states, “I’m a ruthless motherfucker.” The words, rapped effortlessly to his audience over a steady beat, embody his confidence and ease as the center of attention. Despite the video’s straightforward repetition of scenes and the relatively relaxed style of Zazu Babii’s rapping, the song also captures an inexplicable energy. Within moments, this track will draw you in and demand repeat after repeat.
